Mechanical Beamline Technician/Senior Beamline Technician, I08 Diamond Light Source Didcot, Oxfordshire £25,881 - £30,449 per annum (Discretionary range to £35,016), or £33,297 - £39,172 (Discretionary range to £48,048) for the Senior Level Ref: 10138 We require either a Mechanical Beamline Technician or Senior Beamline Technician to work on the beamline I08-SXM within the Imaging and Microscopy Group of the Physical Science Division. The state-of-the-art beamline is dedicated to imaging and spectromicroscopy on nanoscopic scales. The beamline is optimised for analysing the interaction of organic and inorganic matter and covers a broad range of applications in earth and environmental science, geochemistry, biology and biotechnology, medical and pharmacological science, nanotechnology and material science. The beamline consists of two branchlines with a scanning X-ray microscope in operation and a soft X-ray diffraction imaging instrument currently under construction. The end stations include cryogenic specimen manipulators and precision mechanics allowing nanoscopic positioning capabilities. The main duty of the Mechanical Beamline Technician/Senior Beamline Technician is to support the scientists and technical support groups associated with the beamline during beamline maintenance, commissioning and operations. The technician will help to maintain the equipment already existing on the beamline, and will work with the beamline scientists and engineers in designing, installing and commissioning new beamline equipment. You will also help users to carry out experiments on both branches of the beamline, machining small pieces of equipment such as sample holders, and integrating ancillary equipment into the experimental areas. The position requires a good knowledge of ultrahigh and high-vacuum instrumentation including assembly and maintenance of high-precision mechanics in the end stations. Cryogenics experience would be well suited to the role. You will need to ensure that all beamline work is carried out in a safe manner, and that the equipment is appropriately integrated and installed. The successful candidate will be required to maintain a clean and tidy working environment. For further information and to apply, please click on the apply button, to visit our website.
