Our applications range from internet-facing digital services through to data APIs which support numerous other applications. They include services for all audiences, including citizens and staff. They include our most modern applications, through to our older legacy applications. At MOJ you'll be developing acclaimed open-source public services and helping us transform Government for the future. You'll be helping define how we do what we do, and making sure that our systems are built to be changed rapidly. Technologies You will have demonstrable experience of agile development, ideally with one or more modern programming languages. You should have practical working knowledge of cloud-first architectures, and how to build applications to take advantage of the opportunities they offer. Experience of automated testing techniques, continuous integration, automated deployment pipelines and associated infrastructure are essential.

The Head of Technical Architecture is responsible for the profession. Our Technical architects have a good understanding of a broad range of technologies and are able to converse easily with and translate between non-technical stakeholders and technical practitioners. They are able to switch between different problems and responsibilities and are directly involved in service delivery. At MOJ you'll be leading development of our acclaimed open-source public services, with user needs at the heart of everything, helping us transform Government for the future. Technologies You will have demonstrable experience of agile development in Ruby, Python, JavaScript, or similar, and their associated frameworks, and will ideally have working knowledge of several programming languages. You should have practical working knowledge of modern cloud-first architectures, and how to build applications to take advantage of the opportunities they offer. Technologies You will have demonstrable experience of cloud technologies including Kubernetes (having implemented and operated a production grade cluster), Docker and Terraform, plus excellent working knowledge of Linux (including troubleshooting, scripting and automation) along with practical experience of CI/CD pipelines. An understanding of version control with Git is essential. You will: * Transform technical requirements into automated processes including managing tools and testing environments, central code control, maintaining development standards and writing software that automates systems * Deliver automated software components that form part of a toolchain and transform technical requirements into automated processes * Build complex stories * Be able to manage live test environments * Identify and resolve issues preventing delivery. * Share knowledge of tools and techniques with the wider team and technical/non-technical communities * Transform government into a more agile organisation by helping to embed modern development practices * Help build and maintain a diverse, inclusive culture across the development community, growing awareness, inclusivity, and balance * Occasionally participate in 2nd line support during office hours, and sometimes out of hours (for which you'll be paid an allowance and further hourly payment when on call) * Help with hiring, taking part in recruitment of other web operations engineers and technical staff All our Web Ops engineers should have: * Experience of modern development and deployment techniques, including continuous integration and continuous delivery * Experience working in agile environments * Enthusiasm for sharing knowledge, supporting colleagues and working in a multi-disciplinary team * An awareness of technologies used for web applications, e.g databases, backups, CDNs and search, and of Unix-like operating systems, eg.
